Reign FC Rides Huerta Penalty, Ratcliffe Stunner to Third Straight Shutout

Seattle Reign FC beat Bay FC 2-0 at Lumen Field on Saturday, September 12, with Sofia Huerta converting a penalty kick and Brittany Ratcliffe adding a stoppage-time finish. The result gave the Reign their third consecutive shutout win and closed out a three-match home stand in front of a Youth Night crowd presented by MultiCare Mary Bridge Children's.

Huerta broke a scoreless deadlock in the 51st minute from the penalty spot. Ratcliffe put the game away in the 92nd minute, sealing a match that took most of the night to open up. Bay FC generated 1.04 expected goals over the 90 minutes, a number that suggests the visitors had enough chances to score. Goalkeeper Cassie Miller made sure they didn't, finishing with four saves, including a diving stop on a long-range attempt from Claire Hutton.

That shutout was Seattle's ninth of the 2026 regular season, tying the club for second most in the NWSL behind Gotham's 13. It also stretched the Reign's shutout streak to three straight wins, a run that has come at a good time as the playoff picture tightens.

How the Reign Got There

Huerta credited Bay FC's approach for making the first half a slog. "We're a team who wants to be on the front foot and to press and keep teams in their half, and they skipped that press, and I think we struggled a little bit with that," she said after the match. "They had really good hold-up play and were getting in behind, and it caused some problems especially in the first half."

That forced Seattle into a more patient buildup than usual, and the numbers back it up. The Reign completed 72.2% of their passes in the final third, their best accuracy in any fully 11-on-11 match this season, on 133 attempted attacking-third passes, their fourth-highest total of the year. Maddie Mercado, starting at center forward, completed 13 final-third passes, with Huerta adding 12 and Maddie Dahlien 11. The attack was shared rather than funneled through one or two players, a departure from how lopsided the ball distribution can look in some Reign wins.

The one blemish was service into the box. Seattle attempted 23 crosses and four corner kicks but connected on just seven of those 27 tries, a 26% clip that is roughly league average but still left a string of near-misses that never quite turned into a cleaner scoring chance. The two goals that mattered came instead from a penalty and a late strike, not from the crossing game that has generally been part of this team's identity.

Lineup Notes and a Milestone

Head coach Laura Harvey made two changes from the previous week's 1-0 win over San Diego Wave FC, starting Cassie Miller in goal in place of Claudia Dickey, who was unavailable with a head injury, and starting Nerilia Mondesir over Mia Fishel. It marked the 19th different starting lineup Harvey has used across 23 matches this season.

Angharad James-Turner made her 50th NWSL regular season appearance for Seattle in the match, becoming the 27th player in club history to reach that mark. Phoebe McClernon remains the only Reign player to start all 23 matches this season, while Maddie Mercado is the only other player to appear in all 23.

The win came about six weeks after Seattle beat Bay FC 3-2 on the road at PayPal Park on August 1, a comeback capped by a Jess Fishlock goal in the 85th minute after she had subbed on. Eight players who started that road win were also in Saturday's starting lineup. Before kickoff, Seattle sat 8th in the NWSL standings at 10-8-4 (34 points), while Bay FC sat 15th at 6-12-4 (22 points).

Three shutout wins in a row is a real trend, not a coincidence, and it says the Reign's defense has found a rhythm heading into the stretch run. Seattle now turns to a tougher test on the road at Angel City in a midweek match, followed by a trip to face Denver Summit, and how the defense holds up against stronger attacking teams will say more about this run than anything that happened against a Bay FC side sitting near the bottom of the table.
