Seattle Radio Hosts Grill Mariners Front Office and Dan Wilson as Season Slips Away

The Mariners' latest loss to the Los Angeles Angels set off pointed criticism on two of Seattle's biggest sports talk shows, with hosts on Seattle Sports 710's "Brock and Salk" and 93.3 KJR's "The Ian Furness Show" both concluding on September 16 that the season is effectively finished and turning their attention to who is responsible.

The Mariners managed just one run on seven hits in the loss, with Julio Rodriguez's double driving in the club's only run. The game ended with Seattle grounding into a double play. On "Brock and Salk," the hosts noted the Mariners have 10 games remaining and sit 12 games under .500, which means a .500 finish is no longer mathematically possible. They said the team has "now been all but eliminated" from playoff contention.

Over at KJR, the tone was just as blunt. "Put a fork in them. They're done," one host said on "The Ian Furness Show," a sentiment echoed later in the broadcast when the hosts again declared the season over.

Dan Wilson's Frustration

"Brock and Salk" spent significant time on a short postgame clip of manager Dan Wilson, who they said sounded frustrated and "broken." The hosts explained they only had about six seconds of usable sound from Wilson because of what appeared to be a technical glitch with his press conference.

In the clip, Wilson said: "It's just been frustrating. I don't know what else to say about it other than that. And it's not where we want it to be." The hosts said the tone was a departure from how Wilson has sounded over the past two seasons, and one suggested he appears to already sense what is coming for his own future with the club.

That discussion led directly into a bigger question. The hosts on "Brock and Salk" asked aloud whether the Mariners' ownership group should go directly to the players and solicit their honest feedback on both the front office and on Wilson's tenure as manager, rather than relying on public comments or its own internal read of the season.

Divish's Questions and Gilbert's Candor

On KJR, the "Ian Furness Show" hosts praised Seattle Times reporter Ryan Divish for his tough postgame questioning of Wilson, pointing out that Divish is frequently the only reporter asking questions on the road. The hosts said the Mariners do not travel with a digital team and have only one other reporter, identified as Brad, covering games in person, leaving Divish to carry the bulk of the questioning by himself. One host said the tone of Divish's questions matched what most fans are already thinking about the state of the team.

Pitcher Logan Gilbert also drew attention for his candor after the game. Gilbert acknowledged the roster has talent but said the club "haven't played up to the standards that we set for ourselves" and called the year "frustrating all year." He went further later, saying: "Play 160 games. Things are going to turn around because we know we have a good team, and it just never really turned around, and that's on us." Gilbert added that reaching this point in the season is "pretty surprising."

The KJR hosts called Gilbert's comments "fantastic," a rare compliment on a night otherwise defined by frustration.

Both shows landed on a similar conclusion even without coordinating: a talented roster has not produced results, and the public reckoning that used to wait until the offseason is now happening in real time, with players, a reporter and a manager all saying versions of the same thing on the same night. That kind of alignment rarely happens by accident, and it suggests the questions raised on the radio Wednesday will not go away simply because the calendar runs out on the season.
