Reign Host Wave in Nationally Televised NWSL Clash at Lumen Field

Seattle Reign FC is scheduled to host San Diego Wave FC at Lumen Field on Sunday, Sept. 6, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. PT and the match airing nationally on ESPN2. It is the second match of the Reign's three-game homestand, and it pits a Seattle team fighting to hold its playoff spot against a San Diego club that has been one of the league's best road performers all year.

The history between these two clubs favors Seattle heavily. The Reign hold a 10-1-3 edge in 14 all-time regular season meetings and are 5-0-1 against San Diego at home, having outscored the Wave 20-7 across the series. The last meeting came July 26 at Snapdragon Stadium, where Seattle won 2-0 on goals from Maddie Mercado and Jordyn Bugg, both set up by Ainsley McCammon. A San Diego win Sunday would be the Wave's first over Seattle in league play since March 2024.

Both clubs arrive in form

San Diego comes off a 3-2 comeback win over Racing Louisville FC on Aug. 28, erasing a two-goal halftime deficit behind goals from Trinity Byars and Kenza Dali. Dali's goal was San Diego's seventh this season, the most in the NWSL, and the win was the club's 12th of the year, a new franchise record. The Wave have also been difficult to beat away from home, piling up 42 road points since the start of 2025, second only to the Washington Spirit, and sharing the league lead with six road wins alongside Gotham FC and the Spirit.

Seattle enters on the strength of a 1-0 win over the Houston Dash on Aug. 30, where Mercado's back-post cross set up Maddie Dahlien's half-volley finish in the 52nd minute. Sounder at Heart reports the Reign have not lost at Lumen Field since the summer break, going 3-0-1 in that stretch.

Byars was named NWSL Player of the Week after producing four goals and two assists over San Diego's last two matches, and she leads the Wave with 10 goals this season. Mercado leads Seattle with seven goals and has now scored in three straight matches, against Portland, Gotham FC and San Diego. Byars was held off the scoresheet in the July meeting despite putting up three shots worth 0.66 expected goals, a sign the Reign defense can contain her even when San Diego controls the run of play.

Seattle midfielder Sam Meza pointed to the value of playing at home after the difficulty of San Diego's building in July. "This time around, we'll be home, which is naturally just an advantage for us," Meza said. "We enjoy being home. We enjoy playing with our fans being here and supporting us. We're really excited."

Reign head coach Laura Harvey framed the challenge around limiting San Diego's time on the ball. "You want to try and limit the opportunities that they have," Harvey said. "They want the ball. They're very good on the ball. They move the ball quickly. They have a lot of quality in different areas. So, you know, you've got to stay in the game against them no matter what the score."

Seattle will be shorthanded for the match. Ainsley McCammon, the team's leader with four assists, along with Emeri Adames and Evan O'Steen, are away representing the United States at the U-20 Women's World Cup, which began the weekend of the match.

Seattle has owned this matchup for years, and the Reign's recent form at Lumen Field gives them every reason to believe that trend continues, even against a San Diego side that has been the league's most dangerous road team.
