The measure would require brokers to register with the FTC and honor deletion requests within thirty days. The House passed a bill on Wednesday that would, for the first time, create a federal registry of data brokers and give consumers a right to demand deletion of their records, sending the measure to the Senate with a comfortable bipartisan margin. The bill has been in negotiation since early last year. Its sponsors dropped a private right of action to win over Republican members, a concession consumer groups criticized but ultimately accepted. The Federal Trade Commission, which would administer the registry, said it welcomed the bill and would need additional staff to implement it.
